An Overview of Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Cinderella Carriage at resort

Surround yourself with Victorian-era splendor at this one-of-a-kind resort in Orlando. One of the reasons why guests adore this property is its location. That's because it practically sits on the doorstep of the Magic Kingdom. To get to the park, you can hop on the monorail, enjoy a peaceful cruise across the lake or get your day started with a scenic stroll.

Some guests love the monorail the most as their means of accessing the park. On the second floor of the resort is the monorail platform. In keeping with the property's theme, the station is constructed to look as though it belongs in the Victorian era. Only three resorts are included on the monorail loop, making this a truly special place to stay.

The lobby is another spot that many guests call their favorite. Filled with a fun and colorful Mary Poppins theme, the lobby boasts gorgeous and fanciful touches. The bronze water fountain is a delight for the eyes and ears, but other guests may be transfixed by the awe-inspiring grand chandelier.

Elsewhere on the grounds, swimming pools take center stage. The Beach Pool has several waterfalls and a water slide that stretches for 181 feet. Be sure to reserve a private cabana at this main pool, from which you'll be treated to stunning views of the Seven Seas Lagoon. The Beach Pool is conveniently located for those who are staying in Grand Floridian timeshares as it is right between the lobby and the villas. At the shallow end of the pool is a zero-depth entry that's perfect for new swimmers.

Also found here is Beaches Pool Bar and Grill where you can pick up all sorts of delights such as lobster sliders, burgers, salads and more. Just outside of this pool area is a white-sand beach on the lagoon, complete with loungers. This is where you'll find the fire pit where marshmallows are occasionally roasted.

An Alice in Wonderland themed water play area is found next to the Beach Pool. This is a favorite with little ones who want to splash and play in the sun. With tipping teacups and slides, this is an imaginative spot for children who are less than 48 inches tall.

Just behind the main lobby is the Courtyard Pool. With its graceful, free-flowing shape and pop-jet water features, this is the perfect place to relax or enjoy a good workout. You'll find a hot tub at the back of the pool in a raised area. The Courtyard Pool tends to function like a quiet pool since the other pool is where you'll find the water slide and water play area.

Shopping at the Resort

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa boasts three gift shops. On the first floor of the resort is Sandy Cove Gifts and Sundries. A wide array of merchandise is found here, including exclusive Disney Vacation Club items. Also, if you love the H2O bath products that are complimentary in the villas, Sandy Cove is where you can buy full-size bottles.

In addition to items for the home and resort wear, this shop features a selection of food and beverage items as well as products geared toward personal care like sunscreen, aspirin, batteries and more. With pantry goods, frozen foods, snacks, wine and more, you can find pretty much anything you might need at Sandy Cove.

Step into Curiouser Clothiers to pick up resort-themed items or visit M. Mouse Mercantile for Mickey ears, pin trading, plush toys, apparel and all things related to the head mouse.

Spa and Fitness Facilities

While you will probably spend most of your vacation in the theme parks, be sure to set aside at least a couple of hours to indulge yourself at Senses Health Club. Shared with the neighboring Polynesian Resort, Senses is conveniently located across from the wing of the Floridian that contains the villas.

The gym is large, well-lighted and nicely equipped. For both strength training and cardio workouts, you'll find everything you need. Outdoors there are pathways that were designed for walks and jogs as well as basketball courts.

If you would rather relax than work up a sweat, make an appointment at the spa. This relaxing haven is the ideal place to enjoy soothing and rejuvenating spa treatments as well as salon services.

Dining at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

You'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to on-site dining at these Disney timeshares. Fine dining experiences are available at Citricos, Narcoossee's and Disney’s culinary crown jewel, the AAA Five Diamond winning Victoria & Albert's. It is wise to make an early reservation if you are hoping to dine at any of these restaurants.

At 1900 Park Fare, it's possible to dine with Disney characters while casual fare is available at the Grand Floridian Café. Partake in morning or afternoon tea at the Garden View Tea Room or indulge in a quick bite from the Gasparilla Island Grill, Beach Pool Bar or Courtyard Pool Bar. Two lounges are available as well.

Splendid Resort Accommodations

Living room in one bedroom unit

This resort is all about promising elegant and comfortable accommodations. When you use DVC points, you'll be able to choose the type of room that suits your party.

Resort studios can sleep up to five guests in two queen-sized beds and a single pull-down bed. Most of these rooms have a private balcony or porch and a bathroom with a shower/tub combination. A coffeemaker, flat screen television and bathrobes make these a luxurious choice. Deluxe studios are similar but have a kitchenette with a small refrigerator for those who want to make some of their own snacks and meals.

Groups of up to five looking for additional square footage and a full kitchen may opt for a one-bedroom villa. Upgrading to a villa also gets you an in-unit washer and dryer and a walk-in shower. Two-bedroom villas are available for parties of up to nine. These have a king-sized bed in the master bedroom, a pair of queen-sized beds in the guest bedroom, one queen-sized pull-down bed and a single pull-down bed. Two full bathrooms make this a convenient choice for larger groups.

The largest accommodations on the property are the three-bedroom grand villas. With one king-sized bed, four queen-sized beds and one queen-sized sleeper sofa, these villas are designed to accommodate up to 12 guests.

Marvelously well-appointed with four bathrooms, the grand villas are even equipped with a whirlpool tub. Also included is a media room that boasts a home theater system, and the living room and each bedroom has a flat screen television with a Blu-ray player. The full kitchen, complete with dining area, is fantastic for making memorable meals. There's even a laundry room that features a washer and dryer.

Keep in mind that the number of points needed for each of these room types varies according to season and view. For instance, a villa with a view of the Magic Kingdom generally is more expensive than one that has a "standard" view.

Also worth noting is that the Deluxe Studios recently received a major facelift. They now feature upgraded décor and amenities, complete with adorable Mary Poppins themes and artwork. If you are looking for a special experience and you don't miss having a full kitchen, these could be the perfect practical choice for your family.

Enjoy the Disney Parks

Most people choose to stay in a Disney World resort during their vacation so that they can spend their entire getaway surrounded by the "magic." Accordingly, you'll probably spend most of your time exploring the four opulent theme parks on the property. These are Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. Spending at least one day at each of these parks is advisable. If you vacation during a peak tourist season, it might be wise to budget at least two days for the Magic Kingdom.

Don't forget that Disney World also includes two epic water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. Each one offers a unique, highly themed experience in either a tropical paradise or a mythic ski resort. Allow at least one full day for visiting either one of these parks.
